3-Day “Military” Diet Review

April 6, 2013 at 3:20 pm 121 comments

I’ve mentioned on here several times about my desire to lose weight. It was last May/June, I believe, that I decided I was going to take getting healthy seriously. I managed to lose 10 lbs by the end of last summer, which I was proud of, but at some point I just totally let it go. While I luckily did not gain the 10 lbs back at any point, my eating habits were back to pure crap. Fast forward to early March of this year. Not only is it a good time to start dieting for summer, but my brother is getting married this September. We went in to have our bridesmaids dresses fitted and ordered, and I was not happy with how I looked in the dress nor the size I had to order. Size 16… for a 5 ft. tall girl. Ick! Now these dresses run much smaller than most other clothes, and my pants size is easily 3 or 4 sizes smaller than 16, but it still made me feel disgusted with myself (and it didn’t help that two of the other girls were ordering sizes 2 and 4!). On the bright side, it finally clicked in my head that I need to pursue a healthier lifestyle. Not only that, but I love fashion, and at the moment I absolutely dread shopping for clothes.

That following week I started dieting. The only reason I waited a few days to begin was because I had a few gift cards to restaurants that would likely have been major speed bumps in my road to weight loss had they have been staring at me in my wallet during my journey. I started out by searching the internet for some fad diets. I went in knowing that they are just that- fads- and that the results are not only varied, but not permanent. I needed to do something drastic, though, so I decided on trying the 3 day diet. It claims that you can lose up to 10 lbs in three days, but I would’ve been happy with 5! I will post the exact diet at the end of this entry, along with the few substitutions I made. The first go was really successful. I lost 7 lbs! Was it hard? Absolutely. The portions are so much smaller than I was used to, so I was hungry a lot. Not to mention many of the foods weren’t something I typically cared for, especially without much seasoning or flavor allowed to be added, and not everything was easy to substitute so I just sucked it up and did it. I did gain 3 or 4 of those lbs. back after going off of the diet, but then lost 5 more lbs. the 2nd week.

I only did this diet twice over the span of 2 weeks. After doing so well the first time, I had originally planned on doing it once a week until a big chunk of the weight was off, however, the food is just so bland that it was highly unlikely I’d stick to it. It did help me with portion control, lowering my carbs, and giving me a whole new appreciation for the taste of veggies and meats (that aren’t covered in sauces)! I decided to try eating healthy by myself without a strict diet controlling what I put in my stomach, and the weight is still coming off (I’m going to do another post about my current eating habits)!

Anyway, while most people would advise you to avoid fad dieting and anything that claims to help you drop heaps of weight in a small amount of time, I have to say this experience was a positive one for me. I do agree that it’s unhealthy and unrealistic to continue a diet like this for a prolonged period of time, but it worked as a great motivation for me. Seeing 7 lbs come off made me have more confidence in myself and gave me the push I needed to continue with my healthy eating. I’m sure it also gave my metabolism a boost and helped shrink my stomach a bit so I was used to smaller meals. It also made me realize that I could actually get full off of just meats and veggies! My new mentality is eat to live, rather than live to eat!

Here is the diet, with the substitutions I made marked by an asterisk (*) and in italics. The plan I followed and copied is from this website!

DAY 1
Breakfast: 1/2 Grapefruit, 1 Slice of Toast, 2 Tablespoons of Peanut Butter, and Coffee or Tea
*I drank a cup of water with 1/2 tsp of baking soda and an orange in place of the grapefruit. I used whole wheat bread, untoasted, and put the peanut butter on it. I added 2 packets of Splenda to my coffee.
Lunch: 1/2 Cup of Tuna, 1 Slice of Toast, and Coffee or Tea (any brew, as long as it’s caffeinated)
*I substituted the tuna for a 1/2 Cup of plain chicken, cooked with Pam Cooking Spray, and seasoned with a small amount of salt and pepper. The bread was whole grain wheat, and I added 2 packets of Splenda to my coffee.
Dinner: 3 ounces of any type of meat, 1 Cup of Green Beans, 1/2 Banana, 1 Small Apple, and 1 Cup of Vanilla Ice Cream
*I ate (roughly) 3 ounces of chicken for my meat. I don’t have a scale to measure food, so I more or less just eye balled about a half of a small chicken breast. I cooked it in a pan with Pam Cooking Spray and a small amount of salt and pepper, as well as on the green beans.

DAY 2
Breakfast: 1 egg, 1 Slice of Toast, and 1/2 Banana
*I ate my egg scrambled, with a small amount of salt and pepper, with whole grain wheat bread toast. I still drank 2 cups of coffee sweetened with Splenda. I need my caffeine not only to maintain energy, but it’s an excellent appetite suppressant, too!
Lunch: 1 Cup of Cottage Cheese (Or 1 Slice of Cheddar Cheese), 1 Hard Boiled Egg, and 5 Saltine Crackers
*I went with one slice of cheddar, and cooked it with 1 scrambled egg into an omelet, as I just cannot eat hard boiled eggs. Scrambled eggs aren’t my favorite thing in the world, either, but much easier to swallow!
Dinner: 2 Hot Dogs (no buns), 1 Cup of Broccoli, 1/2 Cup of Carrots, 1/2 Banana, and 1/2 Cup of Vanilla Ice Cream
*I used Oscar Mayer regular pork hot dogs. I cooked the broccoli in a pan with cooking spray and seasoned with a small amount of salt and pepper. I boiled the carrots and used salt and pepper on them, as well.

DAY 3
Breakfast: 5 Saltine Crackers, 1 Slice of Cheddar Cheese, and 1 Small Apple
*I broke up the slice of cheddar to eat with my crackers. I saved my apple to act as more of an in between breakfast/lunch snack to try and curb my hunger better at work, and it really helped! I still drank 2 cups of coffee sweetened with Splenda.
Lunch: 1 Hard-Boiled Egg, and 1 Slice of Toast
*I ate a scrambled egg with salt and pepper on whole grain wheat toast.
Dinner: 1 Cup of Tuna, 1/2 of a Banana, and 1 Cup of Vanilla Ice Cream
*I ate 1 cup of plain chicken cooked in a pan with Pam Cooking Spray and a small amount of salt and pepper in place of the tuna.

Just wanted you to know I tried your version and happy to say I lost 7 lbs. I continued to eat the things I liked from different days, same amount but just mixed it up a bit. I’ve lost over 10 lbs as of today.
    Thank you for sharing!

That is awesome, congratulations! It’s definitely a good way to train yourself to eat smaller portions and appreciate healthier foods more (ex. I really don’t care for green beans, but after eating what to me felt like nothing all day I scarfed down my 1 cup of beans for dinner and enjoyed every last bit!). Keep it up! 🙂

Hi Amy. I tried this for the first time last week. I actually found it somewhere else, but wanted to see what other people thought about it. Happy to see it worked for you. I’m not into fad diets either, but this worked for me, too. I lost 6 pounds. I ate everything according to the original plan except that I used almond butter instead of peanut butter and stevia for my coffee. I agree it helps with the portion control. Good luck with all….I hope you have to have the dress taken in!

I am currently on day 2 of this diet. I was starving yesterday and ate a little more turkey than I was suppose to. I was dying to eat some chocolate but thought the turkey was a better choice. I haven’t seen a change on the scale yet but your not suppose to weight yourself until the morning of the 4th day! I am hoping for 5-7lbs loss to kick start me. If I do well I will try it a second week but probably won’t be able to do it much longer than that. It has really helped me get back into drinking my water too!

I did this last year and lost 5 pounds. I’m actually doing it again today and am on the first day. Will let you know how I fared (lol) after. This really is hard…but just a tip that helps me when doing it…I find that it’s easier to do around that time of the month when I’m really bloated because I don’t feel like eating much anyway. 🙂

      Elsa,
it’s not a good idea to do the insanity workout while on this diet. that workout requires a lot more calories than what this diet provides. this diet gives you just enough calories to survive the day. if you continue, your body will eventually crash. you could even develop a thyroid problem; which, if you didn’t know, would be very problematic for someone looking to loose weight.

As far prolonged experience goes I’ve been prolonging this diet but there is a difference though you lose only about 1.5 ibs a week after the third week which i can live with and on my off days i just count my calories and eat every two hours to speed up my metabolism I’ve lost about 9 Ibs over a couple of weeks so I’m pretty happy.

First week of Insanity you gain weight because your muscles have water surrounding them to protect them… no worries keep at it and you will see results.

First, there are enough substitutions that do work that even picky people and highly sensitive to things, can make it work. Secondly, Splenda and other artificial sweeteners are bad for you according to my chemist friend and my diabetic counselor.

Splenda is the trade name for sucralose, a synthetic compound stumbled upon in 1976 by scientists in Britain seeking a new pesticide formulation. It is true that the Splenda molecule is comprised of sucrose (sugar) — except that three of the hydroxyl groups in the molecule have been replaced by three chlorine atoms

Don’t like hot dogs without bun or mustard, don’t like vegetables but once I started eating it wasn’t to bad. I havent felt hungry. I drank 14 cups of water got 30 mins of elliptical workout. See how day 3 goes tomorrow.

Hi, Josh. I am proud to report that I’ve lost at least 30 lbs since mid-March! I’ve only done this diet 4 times, the last of which I only lost about 2-3lbs of the possible 10lbs, but I believe that is because I’ve been eating low-calorie regularly and my body is becoming used to it. With that said, I still highly recommend this diet to anyone looking to lose a few pounds quickly, perhaps for an event or something, or for someone looking to start a weight-loss diet and needs some quick motivation and some help training your body in portion control and how easy it really is to eat healthier options. You definitely appreciate the taste of food more when you’re not consistently eating throughout the day! As for the link, that website seems to have all of the same information about the 3-Day diet that I’ve read elsewhere, so I’d say it’s spot on! 🙂

    Hey everyone,
I also have done this diet many times and in all lost about 12 lbs. I am now doing some research on the 5:2 eating plan. In this plan you fast on 500 calories for 2 non consecutive days and the rest just eat healthy. This might be easier for those that find 3 days in a row to hard. You can find recipies/eating tutorials on the net.
    Hope this helps.

I would really recommend not weighing yourself while the diet is in progress. In fact, the original website I got the diet from said not to weight yourself until the morning of the 4th day. The diet apparently works because of the way the chemical makeup of the foods you’re eating react with your metabolism/digestive system. I guess there is something in each of these specific foods that interact with one another in your body to promote weight loss (actually, I believe a great deal of it is just the loss of water weight). As for the popsicle, I would try to avoid it if you give the diet another go. In regular dieting I would say it’s not a big deal to sneak a popsicle here and there, but when doing a diet like this one where the foods are very specific in portion and otherwise, it probably makes a bit more of a difference because of the added sugar into your diet. Good luck to you! 🙂

On the tuna I got the no mess and no drain and it actually was bad!!! I think everyone might hate the gross soggyness of the tuna like i do but idk. I have to weigh in for a weight loss competition on monday for the last day. Hopefully this will help me win the race!!!

The couple of times I did the diet I didn’t count calories very closely on my days off. Since then I have downloaded the My Fitness Pal app. on my iPad and I monitor my calories through that. I try to eat between 1200-1300 calories on most days, until I hit my goal weight.

Starting the diet today – with my husband…..hoping the support will help for the next 3 days. So, my concern is the no snacking — did you really go all day with just the 3 small meals??? No carrots, or celery or anything in between?

    Reply
    • 32. theamyblog  |  July 26, 2013 at 2:25 pm

No snacking is a tough rule to follow! I really did not go outside of the foods listed, however, there were times (particularly the first and second times that I tried the diet) that I would spread out the foods in each meal throughout the day. For example, on day 2, instead of eating the 1/2 c. carrots as part of my dinner, I took them into work with me as an evening snack. This is also due to my work hours. I typically work a 12-8pm shift and can’t eat dinner until after I get home, so having the carrots a little early helped a great deal! You could also eat your dinner, and save your ice cream for hours later so it feels like a snack!

So it will be hard boiled and toast warmed up in the micro. Yuk! On what the heck. It’s one day of my life. Finish what ya start. Hope I can report a loss tomorrow.

Are you saying you fast only during lunch hours, or in general you abstain from food for a month? If it’s just during lunch hours, and you’d really like to get started with this diet, you could adjust the timing of your meals. They are small meals, so treating the “lunches” as more of an evening snack and then eat a late dinner would be an option. That way you’re still getting all of the needed meals into your day and are still able to participate in the fast. I hope this helps!

Also kindly let me know that tea is allowed on 2nd and 3rd days ?!

      • 37. theamyblog  |  July 28, 2013 at 3:59 pm

Hmm, that is tough. It looks as if your only option would be to cram the whole day’s worth of meals into one meal, which I don’t think is such a good idea, not to mention you probably would not be able to stomach it all in one sitting. My advice would be wait until your fasting month is over.

I would also like to know if the ice cream is really necessary? I would like to skip it or replace it with a low calorie yogurt – 90 calories? Also, my current calorie intake is around 700 — will switching to this diet make me gain weight at first? I have a weigh in on Sunday that I cannot miss.

    • 44. theamyblog  |  July 31, 2013 at 11:15 pm

Actually, there were a few instances where I lessened the serving of ice cream, and even skipped it all together with one meal, and those times I lost less weight. This could definitely be because my body was already used to a lower calorie diet, but I have read that this diet relies heavily on the way your body processes each food, making them all necessary. You shouldn’t skip or add anything to the diet, according to the articles I’ve read.

I have tried this “diet”/ fasting and I feel wonderful! We need to embrace it as a life style change,(gradually) we eat to much!. We have become very obsess with food, we lack control and this method( Military Diet) is a great start. Lastly we should not look at this as a diet but a life time change , in how we will treat our body, let us stop living to eat but eat to live, by portion control and daily moderate exercise!!!!!!!

It doesn’t really say anything about cilantro or lime. Considering you’re allowed and almost encouraged to add lemon to your food, I don’t see lime being a problem. Cilantro really shouldn’t stir things up, as far as I’m concerned, either!

They say you can repeat this diet as many times as necessary, however it’s only recommended once a week. As long as you take at least 4 days off before restarting you should be fine. However, in my experience, once your body gets somewhat used to eating certain foods and even a certain amount of calories, the weight loss will slow a bit, so it’s unlikely to get the same results everytime.

I went from a size 4 to a size 6 when I went back to school. I am 5’2, 34DDD, and now 138 lb!!! So disgusted with myself! I did not have the time to work out due to so much homework, work, and kid activities. Plus the on-the-go lifestyle had us eating out a lot. The aspartame in diet soda gave me cysts, I switched to regular soda (I don’t like coffee and wanted the caffeine). Ugh! Bad all the way around. Once summer came and things settled a little bit with the kids schedule I started working out again, gave up soda, and eating healthier BUT I’ve only lost 2 pounds. I know it took me a year and a half to put it on and I shouldn’t expect it to come off quickly but I’m disappointed. So, I am on day 1 of the Military diet. I don’t have a problem with any of the foods (other than liking sugar in my tea-which i will skip) so I plan to do it exactly as written. I’m glad to see this worked for so many people. I will let you know how it goes for me.

I am on day three and feel starving. I had to eat my lunch at 1030am and not sure if I can wait til 6 to eat, I only need to lose 5 lbs in the first place, do you think this is not the diet for me?

It is hard, there’s no doubt about that. I started my whole diet in general by doing this diet, and trust me it was not easy going from eating anything and everything I wanted to this. I think my work schedule made it a bit easier for me- the days I did this diet I worked a 12-8 shift. So I ate breakfast around 11, ate lunch around 3 or 4 on my lunch break, and ate dinner when I got home around 8:30 or 9. If you’re used to waking up pretty early and starting your day, it’s more likely going to be tougher because you have more time in your day to think about food… if that even makes sense. 🙂 If you only want to lose 5 lbs you may just want to try using this diet as a general guideline, and adding a few healthy snacks here and there or changing some things and/or the recommended portions?

Hello Amy! I have been on the atkins diet since feb 6, 2012 and am down 55 lbs. I am trying to lose 25 more lbs and want to try the military diet to try to get these other 25lbs off. Do you think it will work since I have been doing atkins for soo long? I do exercises at least 4 days a week for 55 minutes and have noticed a physical change but the scale is not budging. Any suggestions/

Considering this diet is only 3 days long, I always tell everyone it’s worth a shot! Even if you don’t lose as much in the 3 days as you’d like, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll gain any weight if you go off of your Atkins diet to give this a shot (which you’ll have to do, since there is bread and crackers involved… and possibly some other things that aren’t very carb-friendly). It sounds like you’ve hit a plateau in your weight loss, so as long as you continue eating healthy (whether it’s following the Atkins diet or otherwise) and exercising regularly those last 25 lbs should come off eventually. Best of luck to you, and congrats on your success! 55lbs is amazing!

They only suggest doing it once a week, so I’d take the recommended 4 days off before you restart the process. The diet as a whole is very low in daily calories, which risks putting your body into “starvation mode” if you continue to eat so little. You can still eat healthy foods and proper portions while off of the diet and not get off track!

I’m on day 2 and finding I’m not hungry at all. But last night when I went to measure my ice cream, I measured for 8 oz instead of grams (stupid me) so I know I ate way too much ice cream. Should I start all over? If I stay on track today and tomorrow, will the diet still work?

    • 65. theamyblog  |  October 2, 2013 at 10:55 pm

I’m pretty sure with ice cream you’re supposed to measure in ounces, as 8 oz. equals one cup, which is what the diet calls for, so you should be good. Either way, I’d keep on track regardless. 🙂

I cannot stand boiled eggs, cheddar cheese, cottage cheese, or hot dogs. Can I substitute a scrambled egg for the boiled egg & plain greek yogurt for the cottage cheese & cheddar cheese? What about a substitute for the hot dogs? I really need for this to work ~ I only have 2 pair of jeans that I can wear from last year & I’m sick of sweats!

I absolutely hate hard boiled eggs, so I always substitute that for scrambled. As for the hot dogs, the website I follow says you could substitute them for a vegetarian hot dog, bratwurst, or a cup of beans/lentils. The cottage cheese/cheddar could be replaced with 2 oz. of ham or 2 eggs (which I’d assume you could do scrambled, as well.) Just make sure you’re not adding anything to the scrambled eggs, aside from small amounts of salt and/or pepper. Hope this helps!

      • 70. theamyblog  |  January 3, 2014 at 1:58 am

The first few times I only had coffee for breakfast and lunch on day 1, due to the particular website I was following not allowing it on day 2 or 3. However, I have since looked into other versions of the diet and many of them allow coffee on all three days, which I’ve tried and didn’t notice it hurting!

If you’re so hungry that you’re having physical pain I would stop the diet immediately and consult with your doctor before you try it again. I wouldn’t recommend pain killers unless prescribed and instructed by your doctor, either, unless they’re the normal dose of over the counter pain killers. If you’re used to drinking a significant amount of caffeine on a daily basis, going even 2 days without coffee (or your drink of choice) could cause headaches and sometimes other withdrawal symptoms. I’ve done the diet before where I drank a cup of coffee everyday (with the exception of day 1, where I drank 2 cups total) and I didn’t notice it effecting my results.

A cup is typically 8 oz. of fluid, and if you just have a measuring cup that reads 1 cup you can use that for dry or solid ingredients.

This is a great diet for someone who wants to lose a few pounds quickly. I now there are a lot of people who disagree with this diet but it does work. I did it last year and lost weight!!! i just started it again today and it’s only three days!!! Of course you can’t go back to eating like crazy when you are off of it and then you will gain the weight back. The only downfall I had was that by the third day I was a little moody but it’s definitely worth it. It works!!!!

I did the 3 day military diet just recently. I struggled with food cravings and was constantly hungry. I typically drank 16 cups of water per day and walked 2 miles per day. I just weighed in and only lost 3 pounds. I guess 3 pounds is better than nothing but I can just eat healthy and probably lose just as much. I wouldn’t recommend this diet.

I enjoyed reading your review of this diet! Most other websites look down on it since it is a fad diet. I am not necessarily looking to lose a lot of weight (but I’m a woman so obviously I’m always looking to stay slim) but I just noticed my portions were getting way to large and I was gaining some weight. I exercise quite a bit, so I figured the weight gain was due to my excessive eating. I was looking for a diet that had real food, and would last a couple days so my stomach would shrink down and I’d get used to eating smaller portions and I think this will really help. I have to wonder about eating hotdogs…I don’t like to eat those for health reasons outside of diets, so I think it’s fishy they’re included here. Hopefully though, at the end of the three days I’ll be feeling more in control of my cravings and motivated to keep eating smaller, and better amounts of food. Good luck to you!

Results will vary person to person, and even within the same person. I think a lot of the weight that comes off initially is water weight, like most fad diets out there. So if you don’t have a lot of water to lose, and/or if you’re used to eating lower calories per day, it may not give you huge results, or any results. The first couple of times I tried the diet I lost anywhere from 4-8 lbs. Since I’ve been eating healthier in general and count my calorie, fat, and carb intake on a day to day basis now, the diet wouldn’t give me results that my daily diet isn’t already giving me.

      • 96. theamyblog  |  August 1, 2014 at 8:25 pm

Weight loss in general will vary by person. People lose weight easier some ways than others, some people lose weight faster than others, etc. The idea of this diet it that you can lose up to 10lbs in 3 days. Some people may lose 10, some only 3, and so on and so forth. I think the diet is a good jump start for a more prolonged healthy eating lifestyle. It taught me, at least, portion control, eating more vegetables and actually enjoying eating them, etc. Again, everyone is different, so I would just do some research around and see what works best for you individually. This diet may not work for you, but you’ll find what does the more you try. My best recommendation would be to pay close attention to what you’re eating daily, as in calories, carbs, fat, and sugar, and set a limit for yourself. I recommend the MyFitnessPal app! Best of luck! 🙂

I started this diet today. In terms of hunger, I experienced the opposite of most people on the diet. I ate breakfast according to the plan and somehow, it curbed my appetite for the rest of the day. I had to force myself to eat both lunch and dinner, as I didn’t want to skip any meals. I never felt hungry, nor the impulse to eat anything extra. I will have to see how tomorrow (Day 2) goes?.

I just completed day 2. It’s very hard for me because I am a type 1 diabetic on an insulin pump so cutting back so much will bring your sugars down big time and only something high in carbs will bring you back up. I did okay yesterday (not too low) but today I ended up having to eat dinner at 4p because my sugars crashed. I’ve lost 40 lbs on my own and still have 14 to go. I haven’t stepped on the scale to see if I lost anything and I’m still doing my normal workouts. BTW, on day two I cut up the hotdog and threw it in the frying pan, then steamed the broccoli in the micro for 1:30 then threw it in the pan with the hotdog so the broccoli gets all the hotdog drippings. Sooooo, much better tasting. I also cut up my 1/2 banana and mixed it in with the ice cream. Wish me luck tomorrow.

I didn’t notice the diet changing my regular bathroom habits, so I don’t know how much of a variable that is in the weight loss. However, many of the items they have you eat contain decent amounts of fiber, which may or may not effect it.

So would you recommend I do this diet Monday-Wednesday so I finish it the day before the weigh in? I was thinking of doing it over the weekend. Saturday-Monday and then doing low calorie, no carb, and smoothies for dinner Tuesday and Wednesday.

If it’s not too inconvenient I would do the diet the last days leading up to your weigh in. I don’t know for sure about this particular diet, but most “quickie” diets tend to rid you of mostly water weight, which is what makes them “effective” in such short periods of time.

I can’t tell you whether or not you’ll lose more or less weight. What I will say is I don’t recommend skipping any meal for a few different reasons. First of all, this is an extremely low calorie diet to begin with, so missing any of the meals or even components of the meals is just shorting yourself of needed nutrition and energy. Second, this diet supposedly works because of the way your body chemically breaks down the various foods you’re eating together causing your metabolism to work faster. Now I don’t know how much truth there is to this, but that’s what I’ve read. Regardless, depriving your body of food causes it to actually begin to store fat making it harder to lose weight. That’s why when you’re dieting just in general it’s usually recommended to eat several smaller, healthy meals throughout the day. This combats hunger and allows your body to digest everything in smaller portions therefore making it easier to burn. Hope this helped.
